In 2013 with additional Sherman Family Foundation support, UMBC embarked on a multi-year partnership with Lakeland Elementary/Middle School in southwest Baltimore.
Sherman Teacher Scholars, along with the Shriver Center’s Peaceworker and Choice Programs, worked with school leadership to develop school- and family-centered strategies that address student and community needs, creating a model school-university partnership that can improve the readiness of students in a myriad of ways. Chief among our goals is to support Lakeland’s efforts to improve student reading and math test scores, and we align our support with the school’s Community School identity and goals. In 2016 the Northrop Grumman Foundation awarded UMBC $1.5 million to establish the Lakeland Community and STEAM Center.
